Publisher
The University of Michigan Press
Author Naomi Reed Kline
Distributor The University of Michigan Press
Description A Wheel of Memory: The Hereford Mappamundi on CD-ROM enables users to explore one of the most fascinating medieval documents known. The Hereford Mappamundi is a late thirteenth century world map approximately five feet in diameter. The only extant, large-scale medieval map of this type, it provides a paradigm for understanding the medieval world view. Its more than one thousand texts and images present a panoramic view of the intellectual and conceptual framework of the Middle Ages. Covering both religious and secular material, they include descriptions of geographical subjects, monuments, animals, races, biblical sites and incidents, legendary material, historical information, and more. The CD-ROM presentation enables the modern viewer to process the thousands of bits of information contained in the map in ways not dissimilar to the Middle Ages, when viewers approached the map differently depending on their literacy, education, and background. But multimedia technology also gives today's viewers access to additional material; for instance, the map's pictures and inscriptions are linked to textual and artistic sources, providing avenues of inquiry across disciplines. A Wheel of Memory will be attractive to a broad spectrum of viewers, from the none-specialist interested in the Middle Ages to teachers and students of medieval history, art, and geography.

Description The „Josephinische Aufnahme”, or the I. military surveying, the first detailed survey map of the Austrian Empire, and in that the historical Hungary, was conducted between 1763 and 1785. About 3400 handwritten, coloured sections (aspect ratio 1:28.800) were made in the framework of several independent surveys, to cover the whole area of the Empire. In Hungary original sized, colour copies of the maps can be found in the War History Institute and Museum, we have used these for this issue. On the DVD there are also two essays about surveying. The earlier, that was published in the Térképészeti Közlöny between the two World Wars, is the work of two archivists, Andor Borbély and Júlia Nagy, and was the only literary adaptation for long decades. The results of newer research are summarized in the manuscript of Annamária Jankó, with numerous appendices.

Distributor http://www.maphist.nl/
Description When you want to know what has been discussed in the messages sent to MapHist since 8 March 1994, you can download the archives files. The MapHist archives are monthly notebook files: all messages are in chronological order, including all internet headers, original messages in replies, wrongly posted messages and junk-mail. Since going through the notebook files can be very irritating, I started editing the text by removing unnecessary replies and junk mail. One thing led to another and the result was a fairly faithful hard copy of the discussions, to which I added a general index with subjects, personal names, regions etc. I myself had some pleasant hours in reading all this stuff. Assuming that other MapHisters would prefer to read hard copies instead of staring at a computer screen or reading one's own printouts cluttered up with junk and duplicate information, I provided copies of these messages at the cost of printing and mailing. In 1997 the number of messages was so large, that the printed version would have over 500 pages. Then I decided the publish it on a CD-Rom in a PDF-format, fully indexed with Acrobat reader

Title Nationwide Route Maps and Databases
Distributor Discus Media Group, P. O. Box 109 (WP 811), Lappeenranta, FIN-53101, Finland www.discusmedia.com
Description Actually nobody should say anything against the fact, that most of travelers' maps are divided into two big groups: for those travelling by own (company, rented, etc.) car, and for those travelling without a car. These two groups are almost same big, but starting from late 1950s and, especially, from 1970s, nearly all the maps had started being intended for the first group mainly. In fact, it had been becoming seeming that the railroads are sentenced to inescapable loss to motor road transport - much more flexible and individual from any point of view. Not stations and traffic details only, the whole rail track networks has simply disappeared from map images. The new millennium turning point changes the general attitude towards mass transit in general and, to railroads, in peculiar. Thus the rumors upon the forthcoming death of rail transporting appeared to occur overstated from any point of view. And we are sure that the class of maps, near to be totally missing now, should revive. The Discus Media project presents a new series or country railway maps. They are intended for business and leisure travelers, freight forwarders and railway enthusiasts and, may be, much more. The printed publication series is based on the most possible actual and up-to-date rail network databases for the whole European continent, that makes also a good basement for compiling all this data, when verified and complete, to the Great Railway Atlas of Europe. And, based on our experience and abilities, it is coming - in both traditional printed, offline and online versions!

Title The 1900 European Map Collection
Distributor Discus Media Group, P. O. Box 109 (WP 811), Lappeenranta, FIN-53101, Finland www.discusmedia.com
Description The "1900" Map Collection possesses over 700 images of maps, published 100 (or above) years ago. It represents the European cities, towns, vicinities, areas and entire countries and groups of countries they did appear at the break of 19th and 20th centuries. Much water did flow under the bridges since then. Two great wars had changed the continent dramatically - the entire empires did sink into oblivion, new independent states had appeared on the map of Europe. The last newly independent members of the continental neighborhood and commonwealth had originated from the former socialist Yugoslavia a decade ago. The maps, that are stored in the collection, are systemized by image names alphabetical order. The index has two independent entries - one for the year 1900, another - for the year 2000. This is done according to the geopolitical situation, actual to yesteryears, when the maps were drawn and published, and to exact nowadays, when you are visiting our pages. Web site features the latest state of the collection. We refresh the contents constantly, as the collection is being replenished to cover more and more cities, towns and sites of the continent, untouched by great upheavals yet.

Title Walking in Edo-Tokyo with Antique Map
Distributor
APP Company http://www.app-beya.com/
Description A CD-ROM production by Keishi Nakagawa, a contemporary graphic designer and illustrator, aiming to view the world of Edo through the Owariya Edo Street Maps, is now available on the market. The uniqueness of this CD-ROM is that one can compare places on the old Edo map and the current Tokyo map by combining old maps and current scientific maps on a computer screen. This epoch-making offline resource provides the pleasure of not only viewing maps but also walking on actual streets on the map to understand geographical information and life in the Edo period. Due to its aspects of game and entertainment, contemporary users who have grown up in a culture with pervasive electronic images will find this CD-ROM satisfying, above and beyond the interesting contents. Viewing back and forth between Edo and Tokyo, which is an unattainable feature through a printed map, it demonstrates descriptive methods and functions achieved only through digital media. Including comparisons with the Owariya Edo Street Maps, Hiroshige's Edo woodblock prints, landmarks in Edo, and explanation of social conditions and city planning in the Edo period, the CD-ROM is an indispensable tool for exploring the old city. It might be worthwhile to reconstruct and reexperience the premodern world through new technology in the twenty-first century. Perhaps one could gain a greater sense of intimacy towards the protagonists in Edo literature and be able to understand the Edo culture more personally.
